How To Host Karaoke From A Computer
Information about this guide
This guide was created in the hopes of helping other people host their own karaoke shows using their own computer or laptop, using software that is easy to understand and maintain. This guide is aimed towards Karaoke Jockeys (aka "kj's") that either want to start in the business, or already have a good CDG database and want to switch to a medium that is easier to maintain. Files on a computer do not scratch themselves, don't need to be switched, don't need to be replaced. And you don't end up with the same song 10 times because it's on multiple albums. However, I will not indicate here how to rip or burn your CDG disks. This is reserved for the Ripping page.
This guide assumes the following:
- You have a PC or Laptop computer with a good quality soundcard that's in proper shape.
- A video card that can output to a TV ("TV-OUT or COMPOSITE-OUT").
- You're running Windows (not Mac, not Linux).
- You have just installed windows and do not have tons of software installed that could open up while you're hosting your show, or crash your computer in the middle of a song. If you have have a computer dedicated for this, then go for it. I suggest a nice laptop, it's not that costly if you're getting payed for your shows. It's an investment!
- You have a few karaoke songs, either in MP3+G or ZIP format.
- You have enough free space on your hard drive for operations such as decompressing files, installing the necessary software, etc. 500 megs should be sufficient.
