Karaoke File Formats

  • Zip - A Zip file normally contains an MP3 and a CDG file, and can also be called an MP3+G file, though this leads to confusion because this rather refers to the two seperate files.
  • MP3+G - This is a combination of two files, an MP3 and a CDG. The MP3 contains the instrumental song, while the CDG is the karaoke file, including lyrics, backgrounds, transitions, timing, etc.
  • CD+G - This is a Karaoke CD, including both song and lyrics displayed on screen. Normally read by a true Karaoke CD player, they are fragile and farely annoying to handle.
  • BIN - A very large file containing raw data of both the music and the karaoke information, it is rather a transition between the MP3+G format and either Ripping or Burning a CD+G disk. This is basically an uncompressed WAV file and CDG info.
  • KAR - The predecessor of true karaoke, this is not a real music file but a MIDI file that incorporates both the music and lyrics. However, KAR files are of very low quality, because Midi is a sampling format, not a compressed music file.
